The band, formed in 2008, is rounded out with lead vocalist, drummer and keyboardist Tim Broderick and drummer, vocalist and guitarist Cedric Canero.
They performed their first show in summer 2009 and began recording an album last March with Tommy Schichtel of “The Concussions,” who mixed and engineered the album at his all-analogue Grand Rapids studio Goon Lagoon. Album reviews for The Tunnel underscore how difficult it is to classify Ghost Heart's sound. Few offer an opinion. Most regurgitate the band's official biography, which includes a Detroit Metro Times comparison to Animal Collective and Vampire Weekend. Honestly, it's difficult to find more accurate words than their own: "Accessible yet expansive rock songs that synthesize electronica, American folk, samples, tribal percussion, shoegaze guitar sounds and layered vocals to produce an effect that is at once joyously communal and deeply personal."
The band's sound isn't the only way Ghost Heart – much like our friend, Frankenstein – is a conglomeration of parts. On stage, each man sits or stands near a drum. Three play guitars and lead vocalist Tim Broderick sits at a table with a sampler and keyboard. Reimink is technically the bassist, and Cedric Canero is listed as the percussionist. The result proves that four white guys from Grand Rapids can claim a tribal sound.
